Last Monday was really long!
My old companion had one less day to pack (because transfers were on Tuesday instead of Wednesday). So we stayed up late trying to get all her stuff together! then the nest day, we went to Utica. It takes about 3 hours to get to Utica and we were only in Utica for only about 2 hours… maybe! So I guess you could say I went to Utica for lunch. 😉 While we waited for the meeting to begin, she leaned over to me and said, “All of my companions are here.” So the obvious thing to do was take a selfie with all of her companions. So we did!
As I told you last week, the missionaries were in charge of Branch FHE. We showed a demonstration of what the members role is, in a lesson with a member present. So we role played with the Elders (We taught the Elders) with Sister Mitchell as the member present (We teach with her a lot). My poor new companion! First of all, this role play is the first time we are teaching together. second of all, she only has a rough knowledge of what we are doing. Third of all she doesn’t even have time to unpack or even look at the house before FHE! So Tuesday was a CRAZY day! And I was tired! However, we made it through. And the FHE went really well. I think people really learned a lot. I am glad that there is at least one companion that never gets transfered on your mission, and that is the Holy Ghost!
On Thursday, we tracted a lot!
We don’t have very many investigators in this area, so we thought it would be a good idea to try and find new people. Well, I forgot that we were having a “car fast” the next day! So I got lots of exercise this week.
We had our Zone wide “car fast” so we weren’t able to use the car for all of Friday. Well, we had a meeting at the church, so we walked all the way to the church. By the way, it’s about 4 miles one way. So we walked to the church, had our meeting, and tracted all the way back! (Well, we did stop at subway). It was crazy!
We saw an older couple. We taught them about how reading the scriptures will help your testimony grow. We read Alma 32: 28-36 it says:
Now, we will compare the word unto a seed. Now, if ye give place, that a seed may be planted in your heart, behold, if it be a true seed, or a good seed, if ye do not cast it out by your unbelief, that ye will resist the Spirit of the Lord, behold, it will begin to swell within your breasts; and when you feel these swelling motions, ye will begin to say within yourselves—It must needs be that this is a good seed, or that the word is good, for it beginneth to enlarge my soul; yea, it beginneth to enlighten my understanding, yea, it beginneth to be delicious to me.
Now behold, would not this increase your faith? I say unto you, Yea; nevertheless it hath not grown up to a perfect knowledge.
But behold, as the seed swelleth, and sprouteth, and beginneth to grow, then you must needs say that the seed is good; for behold it swelleth, and sprouteth, and beginneth to grow. And now, behold, will not this strengthen your faith? Yea, it will strengthen your faith: for ye will say I know that this is a good seed; for behold it sprouteth and beginneth to grow.
And now, behold, are ye sure that this is a good seed? I say unto you, Yea; for every seed bringeth forth unto its own likeness.
Therefore, if a seed groweth it is good, but if it groweth not, behold it is not good, therefore it is cast away.
And now, behold, because ye have tried the experiment, and planted the seed, and it swelleth and sprouteth, and beginneth to grow, ye must needs know that the seed is good.
And now, behold, is your knowledge perfect? Yea, your knowledge is perfect in that thing, and your faith is dormant; and this because you know, for ye know that the word hath swelled your souls, and ye also know that it hath sprouted up, that your understanding doth begin to be enlightened, and your mind doth begin to expand.
O then, is not this real? I say unto you, Yea, because it is light; and whatsoever is light, is good, because it is discernible, therefore ye must know that it is good; and now behold, after ye have tasted this light is your knowledge perfect?
Behold I say unto you, Nay; neither must ye lay aside your faith, for ye have only exercised your faith to plant the seed that ye might try the experiment to know if the seed was good.
They were able to compare this story to a time when they had a tree farm. He told us how the trees grew are how they need good soil. And then he told us that he never wanted to cut the trees down because they were so beautiful. Because of this we were able to help him understand that really the scriptures is important. ans we invited him to try the “experiment” like it talks about in verse 36, and read the scriptures to see if it helps him grow his testimony. I have come to love the scriptures more deeply since I have been on my mission, and I am so grateful for them!
We had a gourmet meal with the Whites… We had pancakes! Liz, their daughter, had a friend over, and she also brought her to church. So we went to Young Women’s this week. I think Liz was happy, she had a whole class, not just herself! Well, back to dinner, we had eggs and pancakes like any other breakfast. It was really fun. We also watched the Mormon Message, “You never know.” I posted it on Facebook a few months ago.
